Animal-Assisted Intervention
Animal-assisted intervention with alpacas in Vaihingen & the surrounding area – stress, ADHD, autism, burnout
An animal-assisted program works with animals to positively influence people's experiences and behavior. Animal-assisted interventions are goal-oriented and structured measures that deliberately incorporate animals into healthcare, education and social work. Unlike purely medical therapies, this work focuses on the experience, the relationship with the animal and the strengthening of personal resources. Thanks to their calm and gentle nature, alpacas are considered ideal “ice-breakers” and support the building of trust.
What is animal-assisted intervention?
Animal-assisted intervention (AAI) is an umbrella term for various formats (animal-assisted therapy, education, coaching and activities). A human-animal team works interdisciplinarily and pursues concrete goals, such as fostering emotional stability, social skills or cognitive abilities. Important: the offerings presented here are not medical therapies. As complementary measures, they are aimed at people who want to improve their well-being or reduce stress.
How does animal-assisted intervention with alpacas work?
Research on Animal-Assisted Interventions (AAI) shows that contact with animals can have a variety of effects:
Stress reduction and anxiety relief: interaction with animals lowers stress hormones (cortisol) and can reduce heart rate and blood pressure. In animal-assisted settings, people often report less anxiety and greater emotional stability.
Emotional support and mindfulness: the non-judgmental nature of animals helps people open up and practice mindfulness. Studies show that contact with animals provides emotional comfort and fosters feelings of connection.
Social interaction and self-esteem: the presence of animals can facilitate social interaction and boost self-esteem. In a randomized study, an animal-assisted intervention with dogs improved the self-perception and behavior of children with ADHD significantly more than a comparable intervention without animals.
Motivation and encouragement of movement: activities such as leading, feeding or walking with alpacas encourage movement and increase motivation in rehabilitative contexts.
What can animal-assisted intervention be useful for?
Animal-assisted offerings are suitable as a complement for various life situations and stresses. Examples:
Stress & burnout: the calming interaction can lower stress levels and helps with recovery.
ADHD / concentration problems: AAI improves social skills, self-perception and attention in children with ADHD.
Autism / social interaction difficulties: in children with autism, contact with small animals has been shown to reduce anxiety and improve social interaction.
Anxiety & depression: AAI can ease symptoms of anxiety and depression by lowering stress hormones and increasing feel-good hormones.
Behavioral and communication disorders: animals provide nonverbal feedback and encourage empathetic behavior, which has a positive effect on communication patterns.
Dementia / cognitive impairments: older people benefit from emotional support, less loneliness and a possible improvement in cognitive function.
Addiction / psychosocial stress: contact with animals can contribute to stabilization as a complement, by fostering mindfulness and a sense of responsibility.
Important: animal-assisted interventions do not replace medical or psychotherapeutic treatment but have a supporting effect. The effects mentioned here depend on the individual context.
What happens during an intervention at Ensinger Alpakas?
Our interventions take place on our farm in nature near Vaihingen an der Enz. Each session is planned individually, lasts 45 minutes and includes:
Arriving & getting to know each other: a short introductory talk and safety briefing. The animals are introduced, and participants learn how to behave respectfully.
Contact & activity: we spend time with the alpacas – feeding, leading, observing. Depending on the goal, mindfulness exercises or small challenges are added (e.g. an obstacle course, a walk).
Reflection: finally, we discuss the experience. What has changed? What feelings or thoughts came up?
We offer individual and group sessions for children and adults, as well as cooperative offerings with psychosomatic clinics. The sessions take place mostly outdoors – please wear weather-appropriate clothing.
Who is it suitable for?
Our offerings are aimed at:
Children and adolescents with ADHD, autism or emotional stress.
Adults with stress, depression, burnout or psychosocial challenges.
Nature- and animal-loving people who want to slow down and draw strength.
Cooperation partners such as psychosomatic clinics, educational institutions or companies as part of health or resilience programs.
The target group is nature-connected, animal-loving and covers the costs themselves. We do not support any diagnosis or medical treatment, but offer a resource-oriented complement.
Distinction – not a therapeutic offering in the medical sense
Our services are animal-assisted interventions and not medical treatments in the sense of psychotherapy or medicine. We do not make diagnoses, do not carry out therapeutic procedures and do not bill health insurers. The offering is aimed at people who want to support their personal development and is provided on a self-pay basis.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
What is the difference between animal-assisted intervention and animal-assisted therapy?
Animal-assisted intervention is the umbrella term for structured measures with animals in education, coaching and healthcare. Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) is carried out by qualified therapists and integrated into a medical treatment concept. Our work falls under intervention (complementary) and not under therapy.
How do I prepare for a session?
Wear weatherproof clothing and sturdy footwear. Openness toward the animals and a willingness to participate actively are important.
What effects can I expect?
Many people report more calm, mindfulness, joy and a deeper understanding of their own emotions after animal-assisted sessions. Specific effects vary from person to person and cannot be guaranteed.
Where do the interventions take place?
The sessions take place on our grounds in Vaihingen an der Enz. For group offerings or cooperations, we can also come to clinics or institutions by arrangement.

References & scientific background
The definition of animal-assisted intervention and its distinction from therapy, education and coaching comes from the IAHAIO study, which describes animal contact as a structured measure in healthcare and social work.
The promotion of health through animals has been researched in many ways. NIH studies show that contact with animals lowers cortisol and reduces blood pressure. Further research demonstrates that animal-assisted interventions ease anxiety and depression and provide social support.
A controlled study with children with ADHD showed that an intervention with dogs improved self-perception and social skills more than an intervention without animals.
Further research demonstrates positive effects in older people (reduced loneliness, cognitive stimulation) as well as in children with autism (less anxiety, better social interaction).
The story behind the alpacas from Ensingen
The brand
Why we do what we do
- Hochwertige Naturfasern statt synthetischer Kompromisse
- Transparente, regionale Herstellung statt anonymer Lieferketten
Our vision
We want to be the first port of call for everyone who
• values natural fibers,
• wants to make sustainable choices,
• has sensitive skin,
• longs for warmth, calm and deceleration.
Our products should not only be useful – they should give something back:
Warmth. Purity. Connection.
Durable, honest and noticeably different from what you can "just buy somewhere."
What makes us special
ehrlich, regional, hochwertig, tiergerecht, menschlich.
